Preheat oven to 175°C. Grease and flour two 20 cm round cake pans.

In a large bowl, combine vanilla cake mix and orange gelatin mix.

Add orange juice, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and orange zest. Beat until the batter is smooth and evenly blended.

Evenly divide the batter between prepared pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.

In a bowl, beat softened butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar. Mix in heavy cream and orange extract if desired, continuing to beat until smooth and spreadable.

Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread frosting over the surface. Position the second layer on top and coat the entire cake with remaining frosting.
